There just isn't anything better than a gathering of some of today's finest street rods in the most beautiful weather southern California has to offer. To help kick the Goodguys/K&N sponsored summer season off right, the Goodguys put on the 3rd Eagle One Del Mar Rod and Custom Nationals on April 4th, 5th, and 6th. This years event saw 1,400 cars prior to 1964 manufacturer show up in the resort town of Del Mar, California where the saying goes, "Where the surf meets the turf" as the event is held on the grounds of the prestigious So-Cal horse track.
This year's celebrity rodder was Richard "Magoo" Megugorac who was named the events Grand Marshall and was treated to his own Reunion. Nearly 20 cars that this legend of rodding handcrafted for customers during the '70s and '80s were on hand. The Goodguys event staff also selected one of the Magoo built rods to receive the Magoo Reunion Award. It went to a little red Model A on Deuce rails highboy that once belonged to Magoo himself and is now owned by Al Kuhn of San Gabriel, CA and shows a whopping 75,000 miles on the odometer. The highboy appeared on the pages of Street Rodder in January of 1979 and more recently featured as a Milestones street rod and in May of 2002. (Editor Brennan was caught pouting as his Magoo-built Model A highboy from the late '70s while present, wasn't selected.)
If the sun and cool rides weren't enough to keep your attention, the Goodguys made sure there was something for everyone by way of good food, the latest and greatest in automotive parts and vendors. There was also a good size auction including everything from Corvettes to classic wooden boats, parts swap meet, and live entertainment.
