The 8th Annual PPG Goodguys Naionals in Columbus, Ohio is nearing its end. Over 6,000 street rods, street machines, customs and classic trucks were on hand to enjoy both a great event and great weather.
It became evident from the get-go that this event would be a watershead time period in our hobby: the level of the quality of cars is clearly at an all-time high. The build effort in both the street rod and street machine catagory is at all time highs. In fact, the cars present at this show would rival any show in the country--inside or outside! Is Columbus now the benchmark to test your skills? Time will tell but if this year is the starting point next year should prove amazing.
Something else, custom rods, those cars of the '50s, '60s and '70s are also on the upswing with their numbers growing steadly. While there may have been more pre-'48 cars at this event than post-'49--watchout for next year!. It will not be long before custom rods are out numbering their street rod "sisters."
Once again it appears Goodguys has put on another good event with little or no flaws that we could see. From all the people we have spoken to there was lots of fun to go around and everyone will be back next year.
This was the first time in 28 years that Tom's Fun Run has gone out of the State of California and it went off without a hitch. With "legs" starting at Mooneyes in California, Vintage Air in Texas, Fatman in North Carolina, Heidt's in Illinois, Borgeson in Connecticut all legs combined for nearly 100 cars from across the country. While some of the legs met up along the way all met in Columbus where the Goodguys had special parking on the Fairgrounds. There was also a bar-b-que for all the TFR participants on Thursday afternoon at Dayton Wire Wheel before actually pulling into Columbus.
Next year preliminary plans for for TFR to begin in Indy at the Goodguys event and work its way westward to the L.A. Roadsters Father's Day event in Pomona, California. Look for more details as time goes on.
