These two hot '31s earned the father-and-son duo of Danny and Greg Brent out of Lakeside, CA, two Top Ten Awards. The roadster pickup belongs to Danny, while the Model A coupe belongs to his son, Greg. Both were freshly completed before the show and sport tons of cool features.
Danny's truck sports a full hood, shrouding the Edelbrock-equipped small-block Chevy and its trio of Rochesters.
The Chevy in Greg's coupe is exposed for all to see, with it's finely detailed three-Deuce setup, ram's horn exhaust, and Edelbrock valve covers.
How about Joe Coglianese's '40 Nash Lafayette two-door Victoria all the way from Chicago, IL? Purchased from the original owner in Casa Grande, AZ, it was transformed in 2001 as a street rod with a 350 Chevy combo, 9-inch Ford rearend, Mustang II suspension, air condition, power steering, and disc brakes, earning it a Top Ten pick at Del Mar.
Jim and Wendy Harman's '29 Ford roadster from La Verne, CA, oozes history. Originally built by Bill Coleman in 1948 as a dual-purpose street/lakes car, it later served as the push vehicle for the Monkey Motion Fuel Altered at Lion's Drag Strip before Jim Hartman purchased it some years later. Now add a STREET RODDER Top Ten Award to all that history.
Cypress, CA, natives Bill and Sandy Dzurilla made the drive south in their '37 Chevy coupe and we liked it so much we gave it a Top Ten pick. A 350 Chevy drivetrain keeps with the all-GM motif, while Billet Specialties wheels, tan leather interior, and Auto Meter gauges make for a very appealing street rod.
Here's another gold sedan of uncommon lineage riding on polished five-spokes, but we promise, it was a total fluke! Parked on the complete opposite side of the grounds, we spotted Jack Burns' '41 Studebaker two-door Champion Deluxe Custom Club Sedan. Jack's Stude sports a Buick Nailhead mill of 1963 vintage, equipped with a pair of Carter AFB carbs and a cool windshield visor.
What reasons do we need to give as to why we like Calvin King's Deuce roadster? In case you just insist, here's a few: McCulloch-blown Flathead, Sharp finned-aluminum heads, Beehive oil filter, whitewall bias-plies on steelies with Merc caps, full-length headers, Buick drums on chromed and drilled backing plates, Burgundy leather upholstery, '40 Ford dash, Banjo steering wheel, and how about a functioning rumble seat? We dig it and gave it a Top Ten Award!
We try not to be biased, but honestly, when traditional cars look as good as Matt Giarratano's A-bone Ford coupe, we just gotta give them an award.
Tom and Jan Erickson are the owners of what some may view as the ugly duckling in the '39-40 Ford realm, but we like it even more for that reason. Their car is a two-year veteran of the Del Mar show and the Ericksons have won everything from an Eagle One Award at the 2003 Del Mar Nats to various Best In Show, Best Paint, and Best In Class awards, but never a STREET RODDER Top Ten Award-until now.
Matt gets extra kudos for running a Y-block to power his coupe and topping it with Offy valve covers, lakester headers, and a trio of Holleys. Inside the coupe, red and white tuck 'n' roll accents the gray paint scheme.
