One of the real highlights... One of the real highlights was seeing Dave Malcolm's hot rod shop. Here, Kenny Gollahon shows Dave the inner workings of the Brookville Deuce coupe. This exquisite Deuce roadster... This exquisite Deuce roadster was handcrafted by Dave. He has had many cars over the years, and his Model T appeared on the pages of STREET RODDER in August '86. Not sure how to explain this... Not sure how to explain this electric-powered wheelie machine, but Dave Malcolm (with his daughter) took Steve Moal and POSIES (hands over eyes!) for a little 360-degree ride. POSIES (center) introduced... POSIES (center) introduced all of us to two of his good friends in Albuquerque. The Stone brothers, Dan (left) and Eddie (right), of Two Brothers Steel were hospitable to the DDT crew and gave us a very interesting tour of their outdoor steel and fabricating business. Kenny Campbell honored Ken... Kenny Campbell honored Ken Gross with the keys, and he immediately jumped in for a spin around the neighborhood driving the '47 Divco milk truck. It now sports a Ford Flathead V-8 and a five-speed. (See the "For Starters" column in the March '07 SRM for the rest of the story.) Built by local entrepreneur... Built by local entrepreneur J.M. Tindall in 1936 and located on Route 66 in Shamrock, TX, the Conoco gas station/diner is an excellent example of 1930s art deco style, including geometric detailing, curvilinear massing, and neon accents. The stop at the '40s-era Wigwam... The stop at the '40s-era Wigwam Motel in Holbrook, AZ, was one of the highlights on the drive into Flagstaff. Does this hotel ring a bell? Look closely at the cars in... Look closely at the cars in front of the Wigwam and think about an animated movie-length cartoon-does "Cars" ring a bell? It should, as the hotel served as inspiration for the movie based on Route 66. "Standin' on a corner in Winslow,... "Standin' on a corner in Winslow, Arizona," was another highlight of the Route 66 tour, which, of course, was made famous first by Jackson Brown and later by The Eagles in the '70s. The corner became a landmark on September 11, 1999. Two years later, this date would be remembered for an entirely different and unfathomable reason. Jim "Jake" Jacobs, of Pete... Jim "Jake" Jacobs, of Pete & Jake's Hot Rod Parts fame, hooked up with us at the El Tovar Lodge in the Grand Canyon and toured into Las Vegas with the DDT. Jake jumped in line with his... Jake jumped in line with his Model A truck as all of us headed toward Vegas. Ken Gross sports his jacket... Ken Gross sports his jacket with an outstanding example of "nose art," hand-painted by Rosemary Dery (www.rosemarydery.com) of Flagstaff, pictured with him.
