13th Annual Woodward Dream Cruise - Road Tour: Leg 6

From The Dream Cruise To The Richmond Nationals
By Jerry Dixey
13Th Annual Woodward Dream Cruise
You could not find a better place to start a Road Tour than the Woodward Dream Cruise-the largest participants' car event on the face of the earth.

Mike Esenbock oversees the goodies on the grill as Sandy Eaton looks on in the background. This was just the first of many great meals on the Eaton Detroit Spring leg of the Road Tour.

On Sunday afternoon, many of the Road Tourians spent time at The Henry Ford Museum in nearby Dearborn, MI.

With maps and directions in hand, this is a small part of the group that spent the week together on the Eaton leg of the Road Tour.

Monday morning's weather set the tone for the first part of the week. We pulled out at 9 a.m. in a hard rain.

Despite the pouring rain, we all managed to make it to our first stop at Goller's Hot Rods Shop in Defiance, OH, in pretty decent shape.

Sandy (center) and Mike Eaton (right) were not only sponsoring the Road Tour, (being the hot rodders they are) they traveled along with us all week in the company's 1947 Ford sedan delivery.

Phil Goller looks over the shoulder of Paul Rebman and Mark Kirby (in the black T-shirt) as they grill some delicious hamburgers. Besides being a good cook, Mark is nationally known for his skills at Motor City Flatheads and now Shadow Rods.

The folks at Brookville Roadster greeted us with pizza and a tour of their incredible facility. It was interesting to see what goes into building the steel Deuce body that is the basis of this year's Road Tour coupe.

After three days of driving in the rain, it was time to get the cars cleaned up. On the road, cleanup usually involves grabbing a bucket and heading to the quarter car wash.

Our stop on Tuesday evening was in Charleston, WV, for a party at Harley-Davidson of West Virginia. Mike Eaton tried on a Harley for size, and it was hard to tell if Sandy looked either intrigued or amused.

We stayed in Lynchburg, VA, on Wednesday evening, and even the doubters felt we had finally left the rain behind us. The hotel staff was kind enough to let us use their hose, so the evening was spent washing and waxing.

On Thursday morning, we made a stop at Sonny's Racing Engines in Lynchburg, VA. Since 1969, Sonny's has acquired a reputation for building some of the biggest and baddest GM motors in drag racing, tractor pulling, and boat racing.

We got an incredible welcome at our lunchtime stop in Blackstone, VA. Local street rodder Mike Shumaker enlisted the help of Chief of Police Nick Kuzmiak to block off the main street, and Barbara and Al Moore (right) treated us to lunch at their Farmer's Caf.

In a picture, this is what a Road Tour is all about-street rods and customs filled with folks cruising down the highway having a great time together for a week on the road.

We had arrived at the NSRA Richmond Nationals by Thursday afternoon. The grounds were filled with pre-1977 rods, customs, and musclecars all weekend, with the grandstands of Richmond International Raceway looming in the background.
