It Must Be Time For The Goodguys Nationals

The 11th Goodguys PPG Nationals held at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio, has proven to an exciting event over the years. Given the event is open to street rods, customs, classic trucks, and muscle cars through 1972, there's something new and interesting to see around every corner. Over the past five years, the importance of the event cannot be denied as builders (professional and homebuilt) compete for some of the most prestigious industry awards. Goodguys has developed its special awards program highlighted by the Street Rod of the Year, Street Machine of the Year, Truck of the Year-Late Finalist, Muscle Car of the Year Finalist, Boyd Coddington's Pro's Picks, PPG Dream Car, Rod & Custom Top Tin, and Street Rodder Top 100. This gathering of awards guarantees honors for a wide berth of rodders. Since the inception of this event, a subtle but significant development has gradually taken place. Of the reported 5,814 registered entrants, some 2,695 (46 percent) were pre-'49 while 3,119 (54 percent) were post-'48. (An additional 582 cars were present in the "for sale" corral, which is added to the overall car count, producing 6,396.) This represents the first time in the event's history that post-'48 cars and trucks have outnumbered pre-'49. Interestingly, the single largest grouping of any one year of car or truck was the 1932 Ford, with 252 pre-registered. Wayne Piepenbrok of Indianapolis,... Wayne Piepenbrok of Indianapolis, IN had his '32 highboy five-window coupe present and powered with a 427in SBC and Billet Specialty five spokes. Again, five-windows are cool, and there are too few of these around. Within the Street Rod of the Year category the top five finalists for this year's award included Joe Stuban ('32 Ford roadster), George Poteet's '32 Ford delivery, Mack and Shelley Bernd ('32 Ford Cabriolet), Steve Legens ('36 Ford roadster) and Sam Magarino ('32 Ford roadster). In the end it was Poteet with his '32 Ford panel that took home top honors. Highlights of Poteet's Deuce include: truck was built by Dave Lane of Fast Lane Rod Shop using a steel '32 Ford sedan delivery. The body was lengthened while the doors were shortened 1.5 inches, flush-mounted roof insert, pie-cut hood, fenders cut and reshaped, and custom splash aprons. The bodywork and paint came under the watchful eye of Dave Lane at his shop, where he sprayed the DuPont Super Jet black basecoat/clearcoat. The chassis and suspension was custom-fabricated featuring stainless steel riveted crossmembers and engine mounts, handmade wishbones (front and rear), and a Hot Rod Works quick-change rearend. The wheels are custom machined and milled with hand-made center caps. Larry and Ryan Hill of Hawkestone,... Larry and Ryan Hill of Hawkestone, OH, brought their 1931 Ford highboy coupe sitting on a Model A frame powered with the always popular and reliable 350/350 combo. Can't go wrong with Radir wheels and BFG wide whites. The interior sports handmade steel and wood, featuring Carhardt seats, '32 Ford truck door panels, '32 Chrysler gauge panel with Classic Instruments custom gauges, and a scaled down '32 Ford steering wheel. The powertrain is based on a 327-inch Chevy with hi-po (camel hump) heads, Tri-power, and a Ford Top Loader four-speed. Another hotly contested award was the Street Machine of the Year. Erv Roller with his Ring Brothers-built 1969 Camaro took home the "iron." The top five finalists for this year's award included Kevin Alstott ('68 Camaro), Gary Abraham ('70 Nova), Erv Roller ('69 Camaro), Jeff Hanson ('69 Camaro) and James McLeod ('69 Camaro convertible). Part of this year's award criteria required that all competing street machines take part in a three-lap autocross. (This proved to be a crowd favorite with many of the spectators on the grounds working their way over to the competition zone to watch.) Woller strapped himself into his '60 Camaro and cranked out three very impressive lap times with a best of 18.466 for the 1,000-foot course. Woller defeated the largest field of contenders ever (28 cars) for the Street Machine of the Year crown. Of course, we are a bit partial but the Street Rodder Top 100 program presented by Turtle Wax. It is always a favorite for us and all the rodders who take home an award from Goodguys, a jacket from SR, and now eligible for the Street Rodder Online Street Rod of the Year. Glass Care
After paintwork, it is the biggest surface on your car; it's right in front of your nose, yet it is probably the most commonly ignored. Most of us pay little attention to windows and screens when cleaning, thinking only the shampoo and sponge need to do their bit. Well, for wipers to work properly, the screen has to be free from silicones, which washing alone doesn't need always shift.
Recommendations:
* Drop opening side windows by a couple of inches to clean the top edge
* Glass doesn't only mean the windows-don't forget to clean the rear view and side mirrors!

Street Rodder Top 100
As is the case with all his hot rods, Jeff Eischen's '23 T will knock your socks off. Jeff's roadster sports a '34 Ford Model-B OHV banger backed by a '48 Ford tranny and a '40 Ford-based homebuilt quick change rear. Add that to a slew of cool components like '39 Lincoln brakes, a '31 front axle, '37 Ford wire wheels, and a slew of trick engineering and fabrication details, and you've got a real winner. Bob's '32 is powered by a stout 383-cube small-block Chevy backed by a 700-R4 trans and a 9-inch Ford rear. This black, flamed, 5-inch-chopped beauty is the epitome of hot rodding-all the right parts in all the right places.
