Throughout the year Ford Racing Performance Parts and Street Rodder team up to award the Best Ford in a Ford award to a Ford car owner who has kept his marque "pure" with a Blue Oval powertrain. This year at the 62nd Annual Meguiar's Autorama would prove to be no different and a great way to kickoff the show season.
This year we begin 2014 with Rick Smith of Madison Heights, Michigan and his '57 Ford Fairlane 500. The Ford is sprayed over the stock sheetmetal in PPG Root Beer and cream paint by Reiter's Metal Craft. Back in the day this Ford would have had the venerable vintage 312 Y-block for power but today Smith has opted to drop in a Ford Racing Coyote 5.0L V-8 with a Tremec 5-speed and Centerforce clutch. Existing spent gases are 2-1/2-inch stainless steel exhaust that is run through Flowmaster mufflers. The Coyote engine cooling is handled by a Superior Radiator cooler combined with a 16-inch electric fan. The factory gas tank is retained but modified to accept a submersible 2014 Mustang electric fuel pump.
Other mods to the ‘50s era “muscle car” is a Fatman Fabrications frontend, a rebuilt stock Ford 9-inch rearend outfitted with 3.70 gears and completed with coilover shocks and a 4-bar suspension fabbed and positioned by Reiter's.
Portage Trim handled the custom leather interior over the stock seating while an ididit steering column, Painless Performance wiring kit, Vintage Air A/C unit, Classic Instruments gauges are fitted to the stock gauge cluster, and a 15-inch T-bird steering wheel are all in position. All of the inside and outside trim was refinished by B&L Plating.
There is our first Ford Racing and Street Rodder magazine Best Ford in a Ford for 2014 and congratulations to Smith for a job well done.
