How The Model T Became The T-Bucket

Norm Grabowski built and owned the car acknowledged by many as being the first Fad T (a customized T-bucket). The Kookie Car got its moniker from the nickname of the character (Gerald Lloyd Kookson III) on the TV show "77 Sunset Strip" who drove the T-bucket around town: Kookie. Norm sold his T in the early '60s, and its appearance was heavily altered by its new owner, so artist Von Franco recreated it (pictured here) in the late '90s before collector and current owner John LaBelle purchased the clone.

In a photo that is sometimes (and incorrectly) referred to as the cover of LIFE, Norm Grabowski and his Kookie T were actually shown inside the pages of the April 29, 1957, issue of the magazine. The publication had done a multi-page feature on the underground drag racing movement and the subculture it helped create, and Norm was about as subculture as you could get!

Paul Cantarano's Cragar-powered four-banger, with Chuck Leighton behind the wheel, was typical of the machinery that raced the California Racing Association circuit just after World War II. It was a roadster-only mentality in the very early days of dry lakes racing, as coupes were not allowed to run.

The KooKie Kar from Speedway Motors used a direct connection to the "77 Sunset Strip" that ran from '58 to'64 to sell its kits.

Besides selling Kellison coupes and roadsters under the Astra brand in the '60s, Allied Fiberglass in Sacramento, CA, also sold T roadster parts and Model Tee Plan Paks for $7.50.
