Doug White's '33 Ford Three-Window Coupe - 2007 Street Rod Of The Year

Everyone likes to have a say, and with the looming national elections we thought it only fitting to ask the viewers of the STREET RODDER Web site (www.streetrodderweb.com) to vote for their favorite ride. In 2007, the staff attended eight goodguys events and the Ocean City, Maryland, and the Syracuse, New York, events and selected 10 cars from each to be in the running for the Online Street Rod of the Year award.

You, our reader, should remember seeing the chosen batch from each of these events on the pages of STREET RODDER magazine. however, our online viewers (which we encourage all of you to participate) also had the opportunity to see the total collection of these cars (and trucks). Frequent visitors to the SRM Web site know there is a car corral where one can see the Top 100 picks from each event posted, which is there until the end of the year. The online voting took place from mid-October and ran 30 days until mid-November. Viewers were encouraged to cast their single vote (at least only one vote per computer) for their favorite ride.

The 2008 Top 100 will begin shortly, as will the second running of the Online Street Rod of the Year, once again presented by Turtle Wax. Turtle Wax will present each of the event winners with a box full of car care products that can help keep the winners' hot rods, as well as your own ride, looking their best-inside and out. Additionally, each winner will receive a special jacket with the Top 100 art featuring the STREET RODDER and Turtle Wax logos. In '08, the owner of the car that gets the top vote will receive an additional commemorative jacket, added cleaning products, and a special prize-you're gonna have to wait to see that, though!

Well, so much for what's coming, let's get to the lucky rodders who had their rides selected by our online viewers.

The 2007 Online Street Rod of the Year honors go to Doug White from gloucester City, New Jersey, for his '33 Ford three-window coupe. Doug was selected at the Ocean City event by staffer Jim Rizzo. The car is based on an Outlaw body and chassis with Billet Specialties wheels at the corners. The Admiral Blue coupe is powered by 350 small-block Chevy with a 700-R4 trans and Ford 9-inch rearend, and features a Paul Atkins Interior.

Coming in a close second is John Thompson from Kankakee, Illinois, with his '31 Ford Modal A Tudor. Staffer Ryan Manson selected John's ride at the goodguys Joliet event. The late-'40s-influenced build style is wrapped around a '31 Tudor featuring a 4-inch top chop with a '32 Ford dash outfitted with Vintage Stewart Warner gauges. The power comes via a Ford four-cylinder with a C4 automatic. Suspension is based on a 4-inch stepped '31 Ford frame with a 4-inch dropped axle equipped with '40 Ford spindles, rearend, and brakes along with a '48 F-1 Ford steering box.

Next up is larry McCawley from Cranberry, Pennsylvania, with his 1932 Ford closed-cab pickup. Jim Rizzo selected larry's pickup at the goodguys Columbus event. The restored Deuce pickup belonged to larry's father, who passed down the truck to him; it was larry's grandson who talked him into making it a street rod. It sports a '49 Ford Flathead with a five-speed, Ford 9-inch rearend with coilovers. The bed has tiger-striped maple wood, while the paint is a blend of white/gold and Toreador Red.

Another viewer favorite was the 1929 Ford Model A highboy two-door sedan sitting on Deuce 'rails belonging to John Myra of Trevor, Wisconsin. Ryan Manson picked out John's two-door while attending the goodguys Indy event. The all-steel highboy sedan is powered by a big-block (402-inch) Chevy with dual quads coupled to a Th350 tranny. At the corners there are Wheel Vintiques wires, while Vintage Stitch sewed the interior in black ultraleather.

Another top vote receiver was William (Bill) Wiemann from Phoenix, Arizona, for his 1929 Ford highboy roadster, painted in PPg black with red scallops. Bill was selected while attending the goodguys Fort Worth, Texas, event by Ryan Manson. The Model A on Deuce 'rails sports Coker ribbed tractor tires in front and dirt trackers in back, mounted to red powdercoated steelies with Ford caps. Other chassis appointments include the 401-inch Buick mated to a five-speed going back to a Winters quickie. The body features hood side panel blisters, a Deuce grille, '48 Chevy taillights, a 2-inch chopped windshield, and a flip-up gas cap. The red and white stitched interior also sports a '40 Ford steering wheel and Stewart Warner gauges.

And rounding out the top vote recipients is the fenderless 1934 Ford three-window coupe belonging to Warren Alvord of Scottsdale, Arizona. Ryan Manson selected Warren's coupe while at the goodguys Del Mar, California, event. The fiberglass coupe body comes by way of Rat's glass, and Warren's chopped and channeled '34 went through the build process with gary hatfield and hot Rods by Dean, both in the Phoenix area. Influence for the coupe came from the Pearson Bros. Salt Flats race car. The powertrain is based on the ol' standby small-block Chevy sporting 350 inches with dual fours, mated to a Muncie four-speed, a Ford 9-inch rearend, and all resting atop a set of halibrand wheels.

It's time to go out in the garage and polish your ride, since you never know when one of the SRM staff members will walk up to you and say, "hey, would you like a Top 100 pick?"
