A selection of hot rods and customs will be up for sale at the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum during Father's Day weekend (June 14-15). That's when Mecum Car Collector Auctions is hosting the Museum's first-ever "Hot Rod Auction," in conjunction with the famous L.A. Roadsters Show.
But it doesn't stop here. On Friday night the 13th of June you can visit So-Cal Speed Shop and then cruise on over for a memorabilia auction. You will drive from So-Cal in Pomona to the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum.
"It's shaping up as the place to bid for the coolest street rods, hot rods and customs," said Dana Mecum, CEO of Mecum Car Collector Auctions, based in Marengo, Ill. _We will be offering an array of great, collectible vehicles, including the famous vintage dragster, the Dueler II, and the only _32 Ford three-window coupe built by Marcel De Ley._
The Dueler II was built in 1969 as a purpose-built front engine, twin-engine AA/Fuel Dragster, which is the predecessor to today's Top Fuel class. Glen Ely is the original owner and campaigned the dragster on the professional circuit for three seasons. The AA/Fuel Dragster class in that era consisted mostly of single-engine supercharged hemi engine-powered cars. There were just a few purpose-built twin-engine cars for that class at the time. The fully restored and running Dueler II is the only one remaining and looks just like it did in '69. And it's up for bid at the Mecum Hot Rod Auction.
The De Ley three-window coupe was scratch-built. The body alone took two years to construct and features a one-off Boyd Coddington-built chassis, Dan Fink-made stainless steel inserts, Clay Smith engine and a Paul Atkins interior. Painted in Boyd Blood Red, it's covered in candied flames by Wade Hughes and Bill Roell.
"These two cars are typical of the type of top-of-the-line vehicles Mecum Auctions are known for," said Sam Jackson, executive director of the Parks Museum. _The Mecum Hot Rod Auction, coupled with the L.A. Roadsters Show going on next door, will make the Parks Museum and Pomona Fairplex the place to be for enthusiasts on Father"s Day weekend."
Mecum Collector Car Auctioneers Hot Rod Auction benefiting the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum at the L.A. Roadsters Show will take place at the Pomona Fairplex in building 4, directly adjacent to the Parks Museum. About 300 hot rods, street rods, customs and classics are expected to go on the block during the two-day event. A $12 admission ticket is good for the Mecum Auction, L.A. Roadsters Show and Parks Museum. A portion of the proceeds from the auction will benefit the Parks Museum. Additionally, a special preview party and memorabilia auction (where 100 percent of the proceeds will go to the museum) is slated for Friday night, June 13.

The Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum is open Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., PST. Current NHRA members are admitted free. Admission for non-members is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors 60 and older, $3 for juniors six through 15, and free for children under the age of five.
