Boyd Coddington is an automotive industry legend whose work is the epitome of the American hot rod. After reinventing the hot rod genre in the 1 960s, within a few short years he was designing, creating and constructing some of the finest and most celebrated hot rods and custom cars in the world. Today, with over 40 years of experience, and seven coveted America's Most Beautiful Roadster Awards under his belt, Boyd's facility in La Habra, California, Boyd Coddington Hot Rods & Collectables, continues to produce some of the finest hot rods, frames, chassis, components and custom wheels in the world. Tension, drama, frustration and humor is inevitable while viewers watch Boyd Coddington and his staff vigorously work to stay ahead of their looming deadlines.
Some of the cars that AMERICAN HOT ROD will chronicle the building of are: a 1965 Mustang fastback, which was discovered in an old barn; two traditionally-styled "beater" hot rods (a chopped 1926 Model-T coupe and an old-school 1931 A coupe) in an internal build-off between two teams led by the patriarch, Boyd Coddington, and the young, headstrong Bluebear; and a Boyd-created custom woody based on a 1942 Ford. In addition, at the end of the build-off episodes, the crew hits the road in their new creations on an adventurous cross-country trip to the NSRA Annual Street Rod Nationals in Louisville, Kentucky. The 1965 Ford Mustang episodes premiere October 1, 8 and 15; the Rat Rod Build Off episodes premiere November 26, December 3, 10, and 17; and the 1950 Woody episodes premiere in early 2005.
Audiences get a first hand account of the emotion, effort and conflict that Boyd and his staff experience, as well as the results the construct. "AMERICAN HOT ROD's productionteam went to great lengths to capture all aspects of our design, fabrication and finishing processes as well as the inevitable issues and hurdles that are an everyday part of custom work," says Coddington, "We've opened our shop to a national television audience for the next couple months and I think viewers will be entertained by our efforts and amazed by the results." Boyd doesn't want to reveal too many details and spoil the outcome, however he assures viewers that AMERICAN HOT ROD is loaded with countless surprises.
