This illustration by renowned hot rod artist Darrell Mayabb shows the artist standing by his '32 Roadster, which he and his friends restored, using PPG paint products. The illustration appears on the 2007 PPG calendar. Mayabb will be at the PPG booth at the Goodguys PPG Nationals, July 13-15, to sign copies of the calendar and discuss his work.
STRONGSVILLE, Ohio - July 5, 2007 - One of America's foremost illustrators of hot rod art, Darrell Mayabb will sign autographs at the PPG Vibrance show truck during the Goodguys PPG Nationals Show July 13 - 15 at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio. Mayabb, who designed the 2007 PPG calendar, has been creating designs for PPG since 1996.
Mayabb began pinstriping cars and creating T-shirt designs in the 1950's before he graduated from high school. He attended art school at the Central Academy of Art in Cincinnati, graduating at the head of his class. Over the years Mayabb's work has been featured in almost every hot rod and street rod magazine on the market, including Hot Rod, Street Rodder, Rod & Custom, and more. In 1999, he was presented with the Stroker McGurk Award by Hot Rod Magazine, and in 2006 he was inducted into the National Rod and Custom Car Hall of Fame.
The 2007 PPG Calendar, which will be available at the show, features a self-portrait of the artist standing next to his '32 Roadster. He, along with friends, restored the vehicle over a period of 10 years. According to Mayabb, "While my children were in college there wasn't enough money to restore the hot rod and pay for my children's education. I made a pact with myself that when I finished the roadster I would drive it to the L.A. Roadsters Father's Day Run and have a picture taken of myself on the Pacific Coast Highway. I accomplished this in 1999 This artwork is an illustration of the finished car."
This is the tenth year PPG has sponsored the Goodguys Nationals. During the show, PPG will select two outstanding vehicles to receive the "PPG Dream Car" award. The "PPG Dream Car" awards are given to one car in the pre-l949 street rod category and one for 1949 and later custom vehicles. The awards are given to the vehicles that best demonstrate outstanding use of color, design, gloss and execution of the paint job.
The PPG booth will also offer a display of the colors and special effect finishes available through the Vibrance Collection of custom finishes, as well as a display of the colors available through the co-branded Hot Wheels Spectraflame paint line. These 12 vibrant colors are the same colors featured on Hot Wheels toy cars, including aqua, medium sapphire, lime gold, rich yellow gold, bright emerald, anti-freeze green, orange, bright red, Hot Wheels(r) blue, hot pink, light red watermelon and purple.
The Goodguys Rod & Custom Association is the world's largest rod & custom association with nearly 70,000 members nationwide. The Association produces over 20 car shows and events annually, attracting over 6,000 street rods, muscle cars, street machines, trucks, classics, and custom vehicles to the annual National show in Columbus, Ohio.
