Sounds of Speed Automotive Record Album Art on Display at The Petersen Automotive Museum

Sounds of Speed highlights the relationship that car culture and music have developed over the decades. From The Beach Boys recordings to The Fast and the Furious soundtrack, the albums displayed in the exhibit show how influential cars have been to the music and recording world. Not only are cars featured in song lyrics and on album covers, but the sounds of a car, from a revving engine to a burning slick, are celebrated as music.

Creative uses of photography, typography, and illustration techniques preview the stories that these records hold. This unique collection of 180 LP's pay tribute to a niche of graphic design from the days of vinyl.

The collection of car-themed albums was accumulated by "Speedy" Bill Smith, founder and owner of Speedway Motors, and is normally on display at the Museum of American Speed in Lincoln, Nebraska.

The exhibit runs through November 8, 2009.
