AUTOMOTIVATED: STREAMLINED FASHION AND AUTOMOBILES

Fashion design and automobile design have been intertwined from the start. This exhibit features automotive derived fashion ensembles from the collection of the Phoenix Art Museum paired with their automobile counterparts of the Petersen Automotive Museum. Fashions include signaling gloves from the turn of the twentieth century through the elegant gowns of the Art Deco period.

Automotivated: Streamlined Automobiles and Fashion
Cedric Gibbons - MGM Art Director in the Age of Art Deco
Tuesday, September 14, 2010, 7:30 p.m.
Cedric Gibbons is considered one of the most influential art production directors in the history of American film. Gibbons led the MGM art department from 1924 to 1956, but his most creative years were 1928-1939 when his movie settings invoked the Art Deco and streamline moderne styles. A Gibbons film's elegant production designs offered a welcome distraction to Depression-era moviegoers and he created a new template from which interior designers would create "moderne" spaces for wealthy clients. This multimedia presentation and lecture will be given by John Thomas, President of the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles and co-author of Long Beach Art Deco. INTRODUCTION TO FIBERGLASS FABRICATION

Do you want to know how to build light-weight custom parts or make repairs to fiberglass panels on your car, boat, or motorcycle? Introduction to Fiberglass Fabrication at the Petersen Automotive Museum on Saturday, September 25, 2010 is the perfect starting point. The class will be taught by Tim Fitzpatrick, former Senior Model Maker for Chrysler and a master model maker and fiberglass expert with over 26 years of automotive industry experience. Mr. Fitzpatrick has worked on the Dodge Viper and Plymouth Prowler concept models and has done the modeling, fiberglass, and carbon-fiber work on Chip Foose's legendary hotrods such as P-32, Hemisfear, Terracuda, and Impression. Introduction to Fiberglass Fabrication is perfect for hobbyists looking for a hands-on introduction to the world of fiberglass and will be a mixture of discussion, demonstration, and hands-on work that will introduce participants to the fabrication process from buck and mold to layup and finishing work. The class will be held outdoors in the Petersen Automotive Museum's parking structure. Course fee is $75 and includes parking and museum admission for the day. FILM SCREENING
AUTOMORPHOSIS

The award-winning film "Automorphosis" is a 77 minute tribute to art cars and explores the psychology of the artist and what inspires creation. Thirteen years in the making, and shot on super 16mm, this film is a feast for the eyes and features over 100 art cars including such fantastic vehicles as the "Telephone Car," the "Hamburger Harley," and the "Carthedral," a Gaudi-inspired Cathedral on wheels.Director Harrod Blank will be touring with his new film by actually driving from venue to venue in his Camera Van (a van covered with 2,750 cameras). In addition, he will be joined by a caravan of 10-20 art cars making this a unique combination of art & film in an experiment to find a new way in independent film distribution. So come early to see the art cars and meet the director before viewing this unique documentary! Admission is free for Petersen Automotive Museum members; $10 for non-members. WOMENS DAY AT THE PETERSEN

Join us for a day of learning about fashion and the automobile, do-it-yourself car maintenance, and rich Los Angeles history on Saturday, October 23. This day especially designed for women features an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour with the Petersen's curator Leslie Kendall on our newest exhibit, "Automotivated: Streamlined Fashion and Automobiles," which highlights vehicles and exquisite apparel from the 1900s to the height of the Art Deco era. Refresh your basic car maintenance skills by attending an introductory workshop on the inner workings of the car led by local auto shop teacher and Petersen Pit Crew volunteer Phil Jelinek. Lastly, enjoy a women's-only peek into LA's past with a private tour of the Petersen's "Streetscape" exhibit with our knowledgeable women docents. $15 for members, $20 for non-members, includes Museum admission. Tribute to 60 Years of NHRA

Celebrate 60 years of the NHRA at the Petersen's annual Tribute Night. Have dinner and cocktails with the legends of drag racing. FANTASIES IN FIBERGLASS

Invented in the 1930s, fiberglass was first used as heat insulation before automobile enthusiasts came to recognize its potential as a material for car bodies and other components. From Corvettes to dune buggies, many of the most iconic fiberglass customs and production cars of the past half-century are on display at the Petersen Automotive Museum. Together, they offer an interesting contrast to both the mainstream cars that populate our motoring landscape and those made of carbon fiber, the newest wonder material to be embraced by today's innovators.

THE ARTWORK OF RALPH ALLEN MASSEY

Art Wall
Ralph Allen Massey's current series, entitled Information Art, is a reflection of the barrage of random, unrelated images generated by all forms of media with which society is assaulted daily. Massey groups the images into modules to emphasize that the compositions are indeed both arbitrary and unrelated, then overlaps the images to further play down their priority or relative importance. Massey believes that, like the trends in automotive design, art is a continuum with exciting new developments just around the corner.

MARGIE AND ROBERT E. PETERSEN: DRIVEN TO COLLECT

During his lifetime, Robert E. Petersen, together with his wife Margie, acquired dozens of important automobiles. Today the Margie and Robert E. Petersen Collection contains one of the most diverse samplings of important vehicles ever assembled. Each one offers a look into our rich motoring heritage and if they appear familiar, it is because you have likely seen them on television, in movies, or in displays at other museums and events around the world.

IMAGINING THE FUTURE:
The Southern California Automotive Design Studio, Presented in Cooperation with Art Center College of Design

Ongoing Exhibit
Visitors will see a comparison of a 1930's studio with a modern-day studio with various examples of the creative process in 2-D and 3-D form from different points in California's rich automotive history. Design demonstrations by Art Center students will occur in the exhibit on the second and fourth Sunday of every month from approximately 10am-3pm.Check the calendar at www.petersen.org for dates.

HOT WHEELS(r) HALL OF FAME
The Hot Wheels Hall of Fame at the Petersen Automotive Museum, features Hot Wheels(r) full-size and die-cast cars, original models, wooden patterns, injection molds and drawings of original vehicle designs.

ALTERNATIVE POWER: LESSONS FROM THE PAST, INSPIRATION FOR THE FUTURE
From the highly styled 1963 Chrysler Turbine to the General Motors EV1, automobiles equipped with innovative propulsion systems are presented to illustrate the growth of alternative vehicle technology.

MAY FAMILY DISCOVERY CENTER
Open Tuesday-Friday, 10am-4pm, and Saturday & Sunday, 10am-5pm The May Family Discovery Center is an interactive learning center that teaches basic scientific principles using the fundamental elements of the car.

Taking a field trip to the Pete is an excellent way to teach your students about the history of Los Angeles and its intertwined relationship with the automobile. Students learn basic scientific principles and their applications as they explore hands-on activities in the Discovery Center.
