We are sad to say that Joyce Smith “Mrs. Speedway Motors” co-founder of Speedway Motors has lost her battle with cancer. Joyce was the wife of “Speedy” Bill Smith; mother of Carson, Craig, Clay, and Jason Smith. Joyce passed on August 4, 2013 after a 34-month fight.
Speedway Motors all started when she loaned her husband Bill $300 back in 1952. With this money, Bill created the popular Nebraska-based speed shop. Joyce worked alongside her husband as a book keeper, parts, runner, counter girl, and financial officer.
“Every step, every minute, every day, she’s been right there with me,” said “Speedy” Bill in his biography, Fast Company. “I could not have reached this point without her. Even if I had made it this far, it wouldn’t have been near as much fun without her. Joyce was the glue that held everything together.”
Joyce was the rock of the company and she created a great reputation among everyone in the racing world. If there has been a race, or a large car show; chances are Joyce has attended. Joyce’s funeral will not be a public event and the family wishes to receive privacy during this time of mourning. The Smith family asks that you celebrate Joyce’s life through a memorial at the Museum of American Speed:

Joyce was very fortunate to have so many friends and fans in the industry. You will be very missed.
