In profile, then and now. The then photo is from the mentioned Custom Cars 1959 Annual, and the now is...well, er, NOW! Note how tall in the saddle Bud sits in the freshly restored car.

Under that sectioned hood we find the last motor the Lehners dropped in, a 283-cid Chevy with Powerglide that Bob had freshened up before he detailed it

The gang's all here. The fresh Fadeaway Ford with (from left to right): Bob Trousil, the car's restorer; Lance and Jay Bergman, the car's owners; and Bud Lehner, the car's original owner. Original trophies won by Bud at car shows are seen in the foreground.

A '40 Ford dash and wheel replace the 45-degree angled and padded plywood shelf that once held sway with a spread of Buick instruments and '56 Ford deep-dish wheel, as seen in Trend's 1959 Annual. The cockpit now sports separate, possibly somewhat thicker, split lower seat cushions as opposed to the original Gaylord-stitched, single lower bench...

...Gaylord also sewed pleated Naugahyde scuff pads in the carpeting. While Bud remembers the bronze hue being darker, restorer Trousil feels it's as close to original as possible. Behind the '40 Ford dash (which Bud highly approves of, as he never liked the padded original) is steel K-member added by Bud's father to give added strength to the cowl.

Today, the car sits a bit higher than as seen in Trend's 1959 Annual, due to a stock front axle replacing the original's dropped unit. There is also a difference in the rubber it runs. The restoration rolls on Coker repop Firestones in 6.70 x 15 all around on '50 Merc wheels, whereas the original ran 8.20 rear and 5.50 front rubber on Chrysler wheels (same bolt pattern as Ford). Those hubcaps are aftermarket Olds-style flippers, as opposed to both Olds and Edsel caps it wore in magazine photos of the day...

...Larger rubber, however, is being considered to fill up those rear wheelwells. We also see that the original '49 Plymouth ribbed bumper was retained, but someone between Bud Lehner and Sam Bergman obviously went for the inset, vertical license enclosure. Also, the decklid (converted into a trunk from a rumble seat lid by Art Lehner) now sports a '36 Ford handle and prop, rather than Art's handle-less, electric-opening setup.

Comin' at cha'...the "Fadeaway Ford" with its cut-down '50 Chrysler grille bars, '40 Ford headlights, and '49 Plymouth ribbed bumpers, as restored by Bob Trousil of Bob's Restoration in Downey, CA, looks just as originally built by Art Lehner in the '50s. The purple color is close to the original's, but can't compete with that old-fashioned "Nitro" Kandy Purple lacquer shot by Bud Lehner himself as a teenager. One change that's not readily apparent is that the front fenders are no longer leaded to the cowl, as they had to be separated for the once-wrecked body to be straightened out.
