Elegant it's not. Brute power it was for its day. The long side pipes signify the small-block Chevy and not the original Flathead. The Go Kart signage was positioned during 1959.

First up was a Ford Flathead replaced by a 265ci small-block Chevy that shortly gave way to a "punched" 283 sizing in at 301 inches complete with a triple set of Stromberg 97 carbs resting on an Edelbrock intake. (According to a 1953 article the car started out with four Stromberg 81 carbs on the Flathead.)

The original Go Kart (Azusa, California) decal has survived for nearly half a century and notes the company as the originator of the karting sport, which the company was. (Editor's Note: Do you know what the significance of the town name of Azusa stands for? Everything from A to Z in the USA. SRM isn't just another pretty book, think of it as a renaissance rodders bible.)

First off, that's Duffy's autograph on the driver's side panel just behind where the door opening would be. The dash/firewall features the instrumentation of the day. The tranny is a Borg-Warner T-10 four-speed complete with a Hurst shifter--cutting edge stuff for its day.

The front suspension is based on a Ford tube axle--yes, tube! Ford produced tube axles in 1937 only for those cars equipped with the "latest" V8/60 engine. According to the original '53 Hot Rod article, the front shocks are Ford-Houdaille.

Duffy is "humping it" around an airport-turned-race track in Santa Barbara in 1958. The long side pipes tell us that this photo was taken after the transition from Flathead to small-block Chevy.

"Fear no one," should have been the battle cry for the Eliminator, as it often took on the likes of Dick Morgenson's Ferrari 250TR (pictured), Maseratis, and Porsches driven by the heros of the day. Since we can see the Go Kart lettering and long pipes we know it was 1959 and Chevy-powered.

"Grabbing" cool air has always been an accepted practice for race car brakes. But can you recognize the scoop? It's a WWII Japanese Army helmet cut in half. We can only assume the other half of the helmet would be on the other side of the car!
