This is the way to start a project: when the friendly truck driver drops this off at your garage! The Pete & Jake's chassis arrived at Barry White's Street Rod & Repair Company with its crossmembers in place and ready for the jackstands.

The first order of business was to install the front and rear suspension so the project could wear some wheels and tires. SRRC started by laying out the parts for the Heidt's Hot Rod Shop independent front suspension. It helps to inventory what you've received and removes any confusion during assembly.

Heidt's equips their control arms with ball joints, so the lower control arm can be slipped onto the lower boss on the crossmember. Use a large dished washer (provided) wherever a fastener rides against the urethane bushings: one under the bolt head, and another under the nut.

The shock-mounting bolt goes through the end-link for the antiroll bar, through the lower control arm's front side, through the shock's lower bushing, and exits the control arm's backside. Use antiseize compound on any stainless steel fasteners.

Drive Train Specialists fabricated this "triangulated" new home for the 9-inch Ford pumpkin and 31-spline axles. Pete & Jake's four-bars and a Panhard rod locate the axle, while Viper coilover shocks suspend the chassis.

This is the basic layout of the steering shaft from the rack-and-pinion box to the steering column's lower end. Three U-joints, two lengths of shaft and one rod-end as a support (all from Borgeson Universal Company) fit tidily and cleared everything.

The shaft tucks under the motor mount and passes the Hedman header easily. A large spherical rod-end mounts to a tab on the frame with two nuts and supports the shaft. In applications that require more than two joints, the shaft requires additional support.

The crew at SRRC did a masterful job of building the brake lines from hard stainless steel tubing and AN-style fittings. The front line from the master cylinder comes forward and splits here for a line to each front wheel. This kind of precise bending is more of an art.

The final element of the '33's braking system is the parking brake, and we're using a pinion-mounted rotor with a mechanical caliper operated by a Lokar cable. By law, all emergency brakes must be mechanical, not hydraulic.
