Come along for the drive; you won't be let down by the company or the scenery. The 2006 PPG / STREET RODDER Road Tour drive-along is gaining momentum. Having spoken with numerous parties, this summer is going to be known as the summer of fun--fun with cars that is. Here are the dates you should keep handy:
May 19-28
Cruisin' Ocean City in Ocean City, Maryland, to the NSRA Mid-America Nationals in Springfield, Missouri.
June 11-18
Vintage Air in San Antonio, Texas, to L.A. Roadsters' Father's Day Show in Los Angeles, California.
June 19-25
L.A. Roadsters' Father's Day Show in Los Angeles, California, to the NSRA Rocky Mountain Nationals in Pueblo, Colorado.
July 28-August 6
PPG Blue Suede Cruise in Norwalk, Ohio, to the NSRA Street Rod Nationals in Louisville, Kentucky.
September 8-17
Shades of the Past in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, to the NSRA Nationals North in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
October 1-8
STREET RODDER offices in Placentia, California, to the NSRA Golden State Nationals in Sacramento, California.
Here is an update on just two of the six legs.
Remember there will be a number of legs you can join in on, but, should you find yourself with time and the inclination to end up at the L.A. Roadsters' Father's Day Show, then beginning in San Antonio, Texas, and heading west might just be the route for you.
Here are a few, and we mean just a few, of the highlights of the Vintage Air-sponsored portion of the Road Tour drive. According to Road Tour Chauffeur Jerry Dixey and Trail Boss Rick Love of Vintage Air, the trip will begin on Sunday, June 11. Along the way you can count on visiting the Pima Air Museum on Tuesday, June 13, just outside Tucson, Arizona. From here it looks like another night will be spent at SO-CAL in Phoenix, which should prove to be both relaxing and loads of fun. The next morning, a stop at RB's Obsolete on the west side of Phoenix will be in order, complete with a light breakfast before hitting the road. (Maybe we can talk the crew from SO-CAL Phoenix into joining in on our drive to Pomona and then onto Pueblo!)
It appears that Thursday and Friday before the L.A. Roadsters' Father's Day Show will be spent visiting the Petersen Museum and the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum. Don't worry--there will also be the obligatory stop at SO-CAL Pomona for the evening before festivities on Friday. This has grown from a small gathering of cars to a full-fledged happening with hundreds of cars and hundreds upon hundreds of rodders in attendance. It looks like we will be staying at the Clermont Inn in Pomona for the weekend activities.
After the L.A. Roadsters' open-air activities on Saturday and Sunday, we will leave for the NSRA Nats in Pueblo, Colorado. This separate leg of the Road Tour drive will be sponsored by SO-CAL Speed Shop as part of their 60th anniversary, which actually kicks off at the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum on Saturday, January 21, 2006, in conjunction with the Grand National Roadster Show.Plans call for this leg of the RT drive to be lead by SO-CAL Speed Shop's very own Pete Chapouris with founder Alex Xydias along for a portion of the drive. If all goes well, we will have Frank Streff of SO-CAL Phoenix already in tow, giving the drive a total of two SO-CAL roadsters. First night on the road calls for a stop at SO-CAL Las Vegas and more fun. From here, maybe we can talk Lenny Ribaudo of SO-CAL LV to come along for the remainder of the drive as we head into some of the country's prettiest scenery. Plans call for this leg to end at the NSRA event in Pueblo, but a stop at Zipper Motors in Grand Junction, Colorado, is in the offering, as well as a stop near the end that will include the SO-CAL Colorado Springs.
