The window film is different from traditional window tint film, in that it is nearly clear, yet still allows 40% to 90% of the sunlight into your car. The Crystalline Film also rejects 97% of the sun's IR rays and 60% of the heat coming through your windows. The film allows you to keep a near stock look on your car while still having the benefits of tinted windows. The film is also non-metallic, so it won't interfere with radio signals or other high tech goodies.

Next we checked out the Scotchgard Paint Protection Film (PPF). The colorless urethane film is the ultimate paint protection. This durable film protects even the most high dollar paint job, from rock chips or any other road debris. PPF also comes with a 5 year warranty.

3M VentureShield Matte Finish Film is one of the coolest products that demoed for the group. The Film allows you to give any paint job a matte finish, for one of the most current looks in the automotive aftermarket world. The crew from 3M transformed the fender of a Cadillac in a matter of minutes. The film can be washed and waxed as easily as your normal paint job which is a definite plus of traditional Matte paint jobs, while also offering some protection for your paint job.

Next up in the demo, the crew from Aerotect applied the new 3M Scothprint wrap film series 1080. This film is currently available in four matte colors (black, white, silver and military green) and five brushed finishes (aluminum, titanium, steel, steel blue, and gold). The film is long lasting, yet easily removable. The film can be layered to create unique designs, such as the dual layer flame design the guys put on the Cadillac they were doing the demo on.

Last for the day, 3M showed off the Headlight Lens Restoration System. This innovative 3-step process allows you to remove scratches and restore plastic headlights, and taillights. The system uses a standard household drill for sanding and buffing. The benefit of the kit goes beyond restoring ugly headlights, but also increases the amount of light, making night driving safer.

We Check Out the Latest and Greatest Automotive Accesories from 3M |

The Coalition is now working with government officials, mine operators and others to develop a permanent program to replenish the salt.

Founding members of the Coalition include the Bonneville Nationals (BNI), Save the Salt Foundation, Source Interlink Media, Southern California Timing Association (SCTA), Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA), SEMA Action Network (SAN) and Utah Salt Flats Racing Association (USFRA). Doug Evans, Executive Vice President, Source Interlink Media, has been named Chairman of the "Save the Salt Coalition."

"The Bonneville Salt Flats is an essential element of American motorsports heritage," said Evans. "Since 1949, Hot Rod Magazine has covered the August speed trials and worked with government officials to permit continued racing. The legacy of land speed racing covers every imaginable type of vehicle, from hot rods to jet cars, electric cars and motorcycles. These efforts are a proving ground for new technological achievements in power plants, composite materials and aerodynamics."

The BSF is a unique geological formation that is also central to the history of motorsports and the industries that support motorsports. Scores of world land speed records have been set on the densely-packed remnants of a huge prehistoric lake. The area is so flat, it is possible to see the curvature of the earth. The BSF has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has been designated an Area of Critical Environmental Concern.

Decades of salt removal by an adjoining potash mining operation have damaged the BSF. Between 1963 and 1982, an estimated 11 million tons of salt was withdrawn. By the mid-1990s, the historic raceway had lost over 18 inches of salt crust. Originally 96,000 acres in size, the BSF has been reduced to about 30,000 acres and those lands are threatened unless the salt removed to extract potash is then returned to the BSF. The potash operation is located on federal lands leased by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM).

The Coalition is seeking to protect the BSF and permit continued mining. One solution is to pump brine water back onto the salt flats during the winter and spring, when the basin is naturally covered with water. As the water evaporates during the summer months, the salt flats will increase in thickness and hardness, and the underground aquifer supporting the salt crust will be replenished. A five-year test program begun in 1997 demonstrated that the solution will work. The Coalition is now seeking an equivalent, permanent program.

For more information, please visit the "Save the Salt Coalition" website at www.savethesalt.org.

National Landmark Needs Salt Replenishment Program |

This bill was sponsored by Green Idiot, Asm. Dave Jones, who is now running for Insurance Commissioner. (Don't vote for this pinhead) It has passed the Assembly Transportation Committee and is now in the Appropriations Committee. Here are the individuals who voted for it: Blumenfield, Buchanan, Furutani, Bonnie Lowenthal, John A. Perez, Solorio, Torlakson

The Official Summary:

This bill requires vehicles 15 years and older to undergo annual smog check inspections, and changes the amounts of financial assistant available for vehicle repair and the eligibility for that assistance. Specifically, this bill:

1) Requires vehicles 15 years and older, with certain exceptions, to undergo annual smog check inspections, instead of the existing biennial inspection schedule.

2) Directs any additional revenue resulting from more frequent inspection to be deposited in the High Polluter Repair or Removal Account (HPRR Account).

3)Increases from $450 to $750 the maximum possible payment to an eligible owner of a high polluter vehicle.

4) Restricts eligibility for financial assistance for vehicle repair to "low-income motor vehicle owners."

5) Increases the maximum income for purposes of defining a "low-income vehicle owner" from 200% of the federal poverty level to 300% of that level.

6) Requires BAR, in cooperation with ARB, to perform biennial analyses, instead of "periodic" analysis as currently required, of the statistical and emissions profiles of vehicles subject to smog check.

As you can see, this is more Green Legislation. This could void the current "older than '76" exemption and put collector vehicles into CARB's new smog program. (AB-2289). Estimates run as high as 50% of our cars on the block out of state just for starters. As time went by, CARB would sharpen their pencil to put any remaining vehicles "out to pasture" too. Can you imagine a Model T or a Dusenburg with smog equipment? We would also be paying for the crusher to eliminate our parts cars.

This is just one reason why this election is so important. The California legislature has got to be given a wakeup call to stop this. California is a state, not a National Park and should be run like one. The goal of the act is to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to 1990 levels by 2020, through a program administered and enforced by the California Air Resources Board (CARB).

Almost all economic modeling of GHG emissions regulations find that the costs of such programs outweigh their benefits. The estimates have come from a wide spectrum of organizations, including the Environmental Protection Agency, Energy Information Administration, Brookings Institution, consulting firm Charles River Associates and others. Contrary to the economic consensus, CARB has gone the other direction and argues that command-and-control and cap-and-trade will so increase the efficiency of energy use that Californians will benefit substantially by 2020.

CARB's Economic Modeling Is Suspect

A few days ago, the San Francisco Chronicle exposed CARB's estimate of pollution from diesel trucks as a 340 percent overstatement, while independent truckers leave the business rather than bear the costs CARB is imposing on the basis of this calculation. Today, a new paper by Robert Michaels of California State University, Fullerton explains the many ways in which CARB's economic modeling of AB 32 is fatally flawed and how CARB threatens California's economic welfare:

* There are no world climate benefits from AB 32. California's greenhouse gas emissions are only 2 percent of global emissions, and its share is falling as those from China and the developing world rapidly rise.

* CARB's results come from a computer model that is by its own admission unreal. In the model, it is mathematically impossible to have unemployment as high as prevails today, and the model does not allow climate policy to change the rate at which unprofitable businesses close or leave the state.

* To create benefits from costly command-and-control regulations, CARB assumes that Californians do not know best what works for their own lives, but that CARB's choices are economically superior-a heroic and unsupportable assumption.

* CARB assumes its new automobile fuel economy regulation will help California drivers by artificially limiting automobile choices. This assumes that people do not already consider fuel economy when buying a new car-again, another heroic and unsupportable assumption.

* CARB assumes that its fuel economy regulations will cost "only" $1050 per vehicle in 2016 and $2,000 in 2020. Estimates by others are much higher.

* According to CARB, the benefits of a low carbon fuel standard that reduces GHG emissions equal its costs. CARB, however, conveniently excludes over $6 billion per year in federal ethanol and biofuel subsidies from the costs.

* Hidden in the "fine print" of CARB's scoping plan is an admission that to meet the 2020 goals it will need to cut the number of passenger vehicles by 20 percent (while population grows by 12 percent), but the Board does not specify exactly how this will be done.

* CARB misses obvious ways to reduce the world's GHG emissions more cheaply than its own programs can do the job. Its recently-ordered renewable electricity requirement increases will reduce GHG emissions, but at 7 times the cost per ton of simply buying European greenhouse gas permits and not using them.

* CARB's program will intrude on both big and small decisions. It will become active in land-use planning with a goal of increasing density and reducing driving, and it has already issued detailed regulations requiring garages to offer all customers free tire pressure checks.

* A Governor's Executive Order (not yet law) wants to extend the program beyond 2020, so that emissions in 2050 are 20 percent of their 1990 values, and CARB is already formulating plans that include a 40 percent reduction in private vehicles by 2030.

Conclusion:

AB 32 started as "feel good" legislation that would set an example for other states and nations, few of which have actively followed it. Since its passage, California's unemployment has risen to 12 percent, and CARB's claim that its policies will improve our lives becomes less credible by the day. An unelected Air Resources Board has chosen to bet the well-being of millions of Californians on computer models that cannot even give an accurate picture of today's economy.

Read Robert Michaels' full AB 32 economic impact analysis here (PDF).

http://canadafreepress.com/index.php/article/28813

California Global Warming Solutions Act, Info on Assembly Bill 32 |

If Prop 23 fails, this will give the Air Board the green light to go after our vehicles. Don't forget, they feel hot rods are a loop-hole in the law, which needs to be plugged. Also keep in mind, if Jerry Brown is elected Governor he will support the Air Board to the max. He has stated he supports AB-32 Global Climate fully and feels the "Green" jobs it will create are the salvation to our states dilemma. We all know this is a pipe dream but these pinheads believe it.

The Air Board sets emission standards and equipment requirements on older than 1976 vehicles, both controlled and uncontrolled. They then start sending out "Random" letters telling you to bring your vehicle in to a "Smog Only" station for a visual inspection. Let's say you have a 1970 Chevelle with engine modifications. They give you a list of requirements that have to be done and I'm sure you may have problems getting you next registration if they are not complied with.

Now let's say you have a fiberglass '32 Ford roadster (or any fiberglass car) with a 351 Windsor crate motor and incorrect registration. The e-mail campaign was organized by a diverse group of environmental, consumer, food, engine manufacturing and other industry organizations that are often at odds on many issues but are united in their opposition to higher ethanol levels that have not been adequately tested.

The groups - and the people e-mailing President Obama - have raised serious concerns about the harmful effects that increasing the amount of ethanol in gasoline could have on engine performance, safety, the environment and food prices.

There has not been adequate testing to determine if increased ethanol in gasoline would cause costly damage to engines in the cars, boats, motorcycles, ATVs, lawn mowers and other outdoor equipment powered by gasoline engines that millions of Americans use every day, the groups have said.

EPA, which has been pressured by some in the ethanol industry to increase the amount of ethanol in gasoline from the current 10 percent (E10) to 15 percent (E15), has stated it will announce a decision later this month on whether to approve the use of E15 in late-model cars. All indications are that EPA is moving toward approval of the fuel mixture.

Individuals visiting the Web site www.FollowTheScience.org and Web sites of affiliated organizations in the Say NO to Untested E15 campaign sent the e-mails to President Obama urging him to intercede with EPA to prevent hasty and premature approval of E15.

Organizations backing the campaign earlier contacted members of Congress and other federal officials to raise their concerns. In addition, the campaign is sponsoring an ad that will appear Thursday in The Washington Post and Politico urging President Obama to respond to the e-mails sent to him and protect the American people from untested E15. The ad can be viewed here and at www.FollowtheScience.org.

The ad states in part: "Mr. President, EPA should wait for the completion of thorough and objective scientific tests, and act to protect our safety and our environment. We shouldn't be asked to pump first and ask questions later."

The Say NO to Untested E15 campaign points out that ethanol burns hotter than pure gasoline, corrodes soft metals, and damages plastics and rubber. As a result, more ethanol in gasoline could have serious effects on engine performance and raises potential safety concerns.

Some groups have asserted that the demand for more corn to produce ethanol has serious environmental effects and raises both food and feed prices. In addition, since ethanol produces less energy than gasoline, it drives down the number of miles a vehicle gets per gallon - meaning drivers must buy fuel more often. Misfueling - with a new higher ethanol fuel mix ending up in the wrong engine and causing damage - is another major concern.

Here are comments of officials representing some of the organizations supporting the e-mail campaign announced today:

Mike Stanton, president and CEO of the Association of International Automobile Manufacturers:
"The testing needs to be completed on E15 to be sure it does not damage vehicles, increase vehicle emissions, result in poor performance, or cause safety problems before the government can make a fully informed decision. Some testing has been completed but other test programs won't be completed for some time. EPA should not rush to judgment without waiting for complete results."

Thom Dammrich, president of the National Marine Manufacturers Association:
"A partial approval of E15 will be an unfortunate outcome for consumers, the environment, and American manufacturers. Marine and other non-road engine products were not designed, built or warranted to run on any fuel containing more than 10 percent ethanol. Ultimately, EPA is sacrificing air quality and consumer safety in order to bolster the struggling corn ethanol industry. In response, thousands of boaters across the country have asked the White House to follow the science on E15 - we can only hope that our federal officials listen."

Scott Faber, vice president of federal affairs for the Grocery Manufacturers Association:
"We should not increase the amount of ethanol blended into gasoline until advanced biofuels have become commercially available and the ongoing testing of the effect on engines is completed. Although we strongly support the use of advanced and cellulosic biofuels, increasing the demand for conventional biofuels could divert nearly half of the U.S. corn crop from food and feed into fuel, increasing the volatility of food prices."

Charles T. Drevna, president of the National Petrochemical & Refiners Association: "The fundamental issue here is consumer protection. Petroleum refiners take seriously our responsibility to manufacture high-quality gasoline and other fuels that meet consumer needs and are efficient, affordable, reliable and safe. EPA stands for the Environmental Protection Agency, not the Ethanol Promotion Agency, so it shouldn't require us to produce untested products that could endanger consumers and might cause widespread engine damage."

Say NO to Untested E15 |

The Attorney General's office wants to get at us for registration violations and charge us for back fees, fine's & interest or put our vehicles in the crusher. Remaining silent, dumb & happy is not going to work anymore.

The CARB now has the power to set its own regulations under AB-32 the Global Climate Bill and they get to keep all the fees, fine's and any other monies they acquire too. That is why they are aggressively chasing business and jobs out of California at the highest rate in the state's history. CARB is not hurting for money like the General Fund is. This is also why California's unemployment rate is much higher than the national rate. This will keep the states revenues declining, the fiscal budget problems continuing and the recession going on and on. As you can see the problems are affecting our hobby are the same ones that are affecting our state.

Nevada advertises on TV to get California business to come to Nevada. I went to a car show in Orange County and parked next to a guy sitting by himself. As I was alone also, I set up my chair so we could talk. He told me this would be his last car show in California. I asked him "why was that"? He told me he was in the Bent Tube Plating business and was moving to Nevada. I asked him what he meant by bent tubing? He replied; aircraft and mechanical parts and other items like outdoor furniture. He said he ran a very clean operation and was very surprised when the state came in, inspected and gave a list of violations. The cost to comply was in the six digits but he wanted his business to be in compliance so he did the fix's. The next year they came in and gave him another list. He then met with his C.P.A. and business advisers and they came to the conclusion he would be out of business in five years. He contacted Nevada and they found him a new facility, paid for half of the move and gave him some tax breaks. Here's the best part; 200 of his 250 employee's went with him; 200 more houses on the market.

Assemblyman Dan Logue sponsored a bill to repeal AB-32; it never made it through the Environmental Committee. I'll bet you didn't know there was an Environmental Committee. He then set about a referendum and we now have Proposition 23 on the ballot. Bravo Mr. Assemblyman. VOTE FOR PROP 23

I believe the AG's office has backed off somewhat. They do not have the resources to prosecute each and every case. Most automotive cases are low dollar and not worth their time. They pass these on to the local DA's and the local DA's have bigger fish to fry also. Big buck motor homes may have some problems though.

The inflationary effect of this nonsense is also going to be disastrous to our wallets. The Air Board is attacking the trucking industry with all kinds of new regulations that are increasing their expenses dramatically. I have a good friend in the Trucking business and another in the semi-trailer repair business. They have told me the cost to do what CARB is making them do is big bucks. These costs will be passed on and added to the price of every product that is moved to market by a truck. The business's that are moving out of the state will ship their products back to California and the price for the same product will be higher. The business's that stay here will have to increase their prices to cover the expenses they incur to their customers too. Keep in mind, Real Estate values will continue to be in trouble if business and jobs keep leaving California.

I think you can see how all this is going down and will continue if we don't get some favorable legislation to protect our hobby. If you use our AB-1740 as an example we have a shot at it in the Assembly but the Senate will kill our bills. Asm. Jeffries has told me the Senate is controlled by non-hobbyists. If we can vote out a few non-hobbyists in the Assembly and get a few more Republicans in the Senate for some balance, I think we just might have a good shot at it.

-"Dyno" Don B.

"Dyno" Don B. on the California Air Resource Board |

Let’s face it, most grown-up hot rodders are still kids at heart, doing on a full-size scale what they used to do on a small scale. And some of them, even well-know pros, are still doing it on a small scale from time to time. And thanks to SEMA, they have a place to race.

SEMA and the Hot Rod Industry Alliance (HRIA) are giving builders a chance to turn a block of wood into a screaming gravity-powered hot rod dragster and compete against each other in the 2010 Pinewood Builders Race, presented by eBay Motors. The race takes place at the annual SEMA Banquet in Pasadena, California, on July 24. According to SEMA press releases, dozens of well-known rod and custom car builders have already stepped up for the challenge of building the quickest pinewood hot rod in three separate classes: stock, modified, and unlimited.

The rules for building the cars are simple. There are none. Each builder has been given a hunk of wood and no limits on what they can do with it. Gene Winfield, Roy Brizio, Bobby Alloway, Allan Johnson, Rick Dore, Art Morrison, and Clay Smith, and other famous builders are whittling away even as we speak. Their designs are no doubt well-guarded secrets and what they come up with remains to be seen, but we hear that most of the competitors are taking this very seriously. Like that’s a surprise.

On July 24, one car will receive the HRIA Cup and another will win the Best Design award. In addition to the challenge of creating a winning car, the thrill of heads-up competition, the glory of victory, and the forest-fresh scent of mean pine machines, there is a philanthropic side to this whole thing. Aftermarket companies are stepping up with cash sponsorships for the cars. All the proceeds raised will go to the Victory Junction Gang Camp and to Childhelp USA. Later in the year, all of the pinewood racecars, autographed by their builders, will be on display at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas. A silent auction among SEMA members will raise additional money for the charities.

We’re planning on being at the starting line when the flag drops on July 24 and will bring you all the action from the race. Stay tuned.

Where Wood Plus Gravity Equals Great Racing Action |
