Adapting contemporary tansmissons to vintage engines
By Ron Ceridono

By Pat McGUire, Wilcap Company
The name Wilcap has been synonymous with hot rodding, as well as with transmission adapters, for decades. Until recently the company was run by Lloyd Capanna, son of one of its founders, the legendary Tony Capanna. Sadly, both Lloyd and Tony have passed away, but the company lives on. Now in the capable hands of Pat McGuire, Wilcap is up and running producing a line of Wilcap adapters, flywheels and Hemi components, as well as Sharp speed equipment for Flatheads. An avid hot rodder, McGuire brings a rich background in aerospace manufacturing to two of the most famous brand names in the industry. --Ron Ceridono

A great example of a contemporary automatic behind a vintage engine is a C4 backing a Flathead Ford.

Speedway Motors offers kits for '49-53 engines that include rebuilt transmissions.
0307SR Trans20 Z
Bendtsen's Transmission Adapters offers two Buick nailhead engine adapters ('57-63 and '64-66) to allow for the use of popular Chevy transmissions. Straight-eight adapters are also available.
0307SR Trans03 Z
Olds engines to Chevy transmission adapters are also available from Bendtsen's. Two styles are available, one for the 303/324 series, another for the 371/394.
0307SR Trans04 Z
Proving that just about any transmission can be adapted to any engine is Bendtsen's Cad flathead V-8 to Chevy automatic.
0307SR Trans05 Z
For engines with extended bellhousings--some Oldsmobiles and Chryslers for example--Bendtsen's uses extended input shafts with support bearings. Shown is a '49-64 Olds to Chevy kit.

Wilcap, one of the oldest names in the adapter business, is back under new ownership. They offer a variety of adapters made to aerospace tolerances.
0307SR Trans07 Z
Some vintage adapters, such as this 392 to early-Ford adapter, are still available from Wilcap. They also make custom flywheels and flexplates.
0307SR Trans08 Z
Wilcap alsoproduces adapters to mount the latest overdrive autos to a variety of engines. Manual adapters are also available
0307SR Trans09 Z
Look closely and you'll see a modern T5 behind a Flathead Ford. The adapter, as well as the chassis and all the engine goodies are from Cornhuskers.

One of the pioneers of the Flathead to C4 combo is Flat-O Products. Along with adapters, they can also supply fully prepped transmissions.
0307SR Trans11 Z
Flat-O has adapters for '32-53 Flathead V-8s (shown) as well as for Lincoln V-12s.
0307SR Trans12 Z
A truly unique offering from Flat-O is the Chevord transmission. It consists of a Chevy bellhousing with a shortened C4 transmission. Applications include Chevy, Cad, Buick, Olds, and Pontiac.
0307SR Trans13 Z
Although Keisler specializes in transmission conversions for Jags and Mopars, they have a couple of items that will interest street rodders. One is this bellhousing that mates big-block Mopars to Tremec five-speeds.
0307SR Trans14 Z
Keisler can supply a variety of five- and six-speed transmissions. Shifter locations can be varied to fit particular applications.
0307SR Trans15 Z
A popular offering from Flat-O is the Y-block Ford to C4 adapter. Side brackets on the bellhousing are available for stock motor mounts.
0307SR Trans16 Z
Power Play specializes in Chrysler parts, including this '51-53 Hemi to GM four-speed adapter.
0307SR Trans17 Z
With some adaptations a custom flywheel will be required. This steel example for a Hemi is from Power Play. Aluminum versions are also available. Note the pilot bearing in the flywheel.
0307SR Trans18 Z
Tanson Enterprises specializes in early-Oldsmobile parts and adapters. This is a Turbo 350 modified to bolt to an early-Olds engine. In this case, optional side brackets have been added to fit the stock engine/transmission mounts.
0307SR Trans19 Z
J.W. Performance has a unique approach to adapters--a replacement bellhousing. The original is cut off the transmission and then theirs bolts in place with the front pump bolts.
0307SR Trans25a Z
Called Ultra-Bells, J.W. Performance bellhousings are SFI approved for NHRA/IHRA drag racing. While most applications are for contemporary engines, early Hemi to GM transmission Ultra-Bells are available.
0307SR Trans23 Z
When adapting manual transmissions the pressure plate that fits the engine is used with a disc that fits the transmission. Make sure the two are compatible. This is a 10 1/2 inch Chrysler pressure plate with a 10 1/2 inch Ford disc.
0307SR Trans25 Z
As adapters move the transmission back from the crankshaft, pilot bearing adapters/extensions may be required.
0307SR Trans26 Z
Pilot bushing adapters may make up for differences in diameters or in distance from the transmission to the crankshaft. Partially in place, this adapter is for GM four-speed to Hemi swaps.
0307SR Trans21 Z
As with stick swaps, some automatics will require a custom flexplate. Power Play makes this one for Chrysler Hemi/GM trans combos. The recess fits over the OD of the Chrysler crankshaft flange. The hub of the converter registers in the center hole.
0307SR Trans22 Z
Sometimes you have to go the long way around the barn to get where you want to be. This Lakewood scattershield mounts a Ford four-speed to a small-block Chevy. With the addition of a Chrysler to Chevy adapter it was used to put a top-loader behind a Hemi.
0307SR Trans27 Z
When swapping transmissions one of the most important considerations is what starter will fit. This early Hemi to GM transmission adapter uses a late Mopar gear drive starter.
0307SR Trans28 Z
While this doesn't really fall into the vintage engine/contemporary transmission category, it's still a cool piece. Advance Adapters, known for products for off-roaders, manufactures an adapter plate to mate Ford small-block engines to Chevy automatic transmissions. The kit consists of a steel adapter plate, dowel pins, torque converter spacer adapter, and mounting hardware. (Photo courtesy of Advance Adapters).

Another adapter that falls outside the vintage engine envelope is this modular bellhousing from McLeod. Designed to adapt to nearly all transmissions on the market today, it's easily modified to fit anticipated future designs. Applications include all Chevy engines from '55-03 and all Buick, Olds, and Pontiac engines from '64-02, excluding '93-97 Camaros (hydraulic pull clutch) and '97-and-up Corvettes (with torque tube). Also available are three new designs for big-block, small-block, and 4.6-5.4L Fords. (Photo courtesy of McLeod).
