Steve started by taking careful measurements using a trammel tool with pointers, so he could reach lower than with a measuring tape. "the doors seperate the front and back of the car," he said. "they can be misalighned by an inch left or right: it doesn't show, so you have to be sure of your measurements."

In order to build Carson-style tops to an exact standard, Steve fabricated a splash (really an exact copy of a '32 roadster cockpit) from a Brookville steel body; he took a body cast, made a plug, and then fabricated the splash in fiberglass with purple gelcoat he had on hand. He will do the same for the other model-year tops he's planning.

"The way the cowl is shimmed creates the correct alignment or can cause misalignment," Steve said. He's made a mechanism that shifts the cowl left or right to ensure correct dimensions. To make the jig for an actual car, he takes many measurements. It's easier to work right on the splash. There's no risk of damaging paint or trim.

Weight is a factor; Steve's designed his Carson-style top so it isn't heavy to lift; but it is bulky, so it takes two men to remove it. "Aluminum cuts a lot of weight," he says, "and you don't have to paint or powdercoat it."

Steve made his top jig out of square tube pieces with roll pins to locate the top bows. He welded the header, made from 1 1/2x1/2-inch channel, to the window openings. Solid oak was used for the custom-made front header bow, and plywood was fitted in the channels for tacking on top fabric.

Steve carefully welded the top together using the jig, thus ensuring it would fit perfectly when he was finished.

Steve rolled the rear bow with a tubing roller that he modified so it's easier to adjust. He can visually tighten the roller system to gain loft in the top bows as well as create loft between the curves to fashion the rear bow. When he bends tube bows, Steve uses EMT benders to create an outside radius, and then puts "a smile" between them.
