Buick Nailheads T Bucket
Many will tell you that Tommy Ivo's T-bucket is still to this day one of the best looking of the genre. We have to agree, and guess what it has for power-the venerable Buick Nailhead.

Buick Nailheads Dual Quads
Nailhead installations today run the gamut from pristine to practical. The former is exemplified by Russ Martin's '22 Buick roadster with all "pre-1962" goodies such as Stelling & Hellings air filter atop Edelbrock dual-quads, Moon valley cover, rare Spaulding Flamethrower ignition, and Fenton valve covers.

Buick Nailheads 1920S Buick
On the other end of the spectrum is this cut-down '20s Buick closed car with an "undressed" Nailhead and the distinctive original Buick radiator shell. Even the hard-core guys don't mind having some dependable vintage power, instead of trying to patina a 350 Chevy.

Buick Nailheads 1957 Dragstrip
Buick has a colorful history of performance, but there was no better unofficial spokesperson to hot rodders than Tommy Ivo, shown here smokin' the recaps at Santa Ana Dragstrip in 1957. In another year, he was piloting an injected Nailhead in a gas dragster.

Buick Nailheads Nailhead Installation
Mike Keeler's beautiful Deuce five-window illustrates a nice Nailhead installation. You can see the amount of recess on the firewall, and also how good the stock right-side iron exhaust manifolds fit hot rods. On the left side, Mike did some crafty cutting/welding of a manifold to clear the steering.

Buick Nailheads Oil Pan
Most later Nailheads you find will have a center-sump oil pan (top). A rear-sump oil pan (bottom) was used on '57-61 Nailheads (also rare GS engines) and will be a necessity for most hot rod installations for clearance (tie rod, cross-steering). The pan swap will require a different pickup for the oil pump, available from J&C's Parts.

Buick Nailheads Outside Header
One way to handle the left-side traffic jam of exhaust/steering/starter is to use an outside header, which gives plenty of clearance for a steering shaft and a forward-mounted steering box.

Buick Nailheads Mini Starter
If you want a lighter, more modern starter that can also save you some room, you might contact Tom Telesco for this mini-starter. Compare its length to the behemoth Nailhead starter above it here.

Buick Nailheads Th400
Earlier engines can benefit from the late Nailhead's TH400 with switch-pitch converter. The trans bolts on, but the Centerville Auto Repair adapter (at right) is required to mate the flexplate to the shorter early crank flange.
