Though not totally finished this is what my flathead ended up looking like after its first weekend in my garage. I'm hoping that it'll hold me until H&H Flatheads finishes rebuilding my other flathead (I got two as part of a package deal, but that's a story in itself).

This is the before picture. It was pretty clean on the outside and it did sport an aftermarket two-carb manifold topped by a pair of rebuilt 94's. The engine had come from a friends '48 Ford sedan, and though not the peppiest, it ran pretty darn good so I thought I'd be safe spending a few bucks and a bit of elbow grease to dress it up a bit.

Among the stuff I merrily added to my Speedway order was an overhaul gasket set, a pair of Edelbrock cylinder heads, an Edelbrock two-carb intake manifold and generator bracket, an electric fuel pump, a fuel pressure regulator (you never want to put more than four pounds of fuel pressure through a 94 or 97), a fuel pump block off plate, a pair of water pumps, a new oil cap/breather, chrome acorn nuts for both the heads and intake, and a new throwout bearing (did mention that this baby's backed by a T5 five speed?). Add that pile to some degreaser, fresh engine paint, and gasket sealer and I just about blew my whole parts budget for a while. Hoses, belts, and whatever else I forgot would have to wait.

The penetrating oil worked well and the nuts loosened without a hitch. Getting' the heads off the block was another story though--they were stuck so tight it took a rubber mallet and about twenty minutes each to get `em off.

With the intake and heads stripped off the block and the gasket surfaces cleaned up, I then moved to the front of the engine. I turned it over to TDC and pulled the distributor and the front crank pulley so I could replace the front cover gasket and seal. While I was at it I planned on replacing the water pumps with my new Speedway ones too. Well, apparently the water pumps had been on the engine for years--the mounting bolts located in the water outlets were so rusted that the hex heads were eaten away and no socket would fit `em. At that point I was stuck.

Well, the only thing I could think to do was to cut off the radiator hose sleeves to see if I might get a pair of Vice Grips on `em. Needless to say, that didn't work either.

The only other thing I could think of doing was welding a hardened bolt to the head of the deteriorated bolts so that I could go back to a socket wrench to back `em out. Good idea--I thought anyway. All that did was to allow me to break off the heads of both bolts--are we havin' fun yet?
