With the intake and heads stripped off the block and the gasket surfaces cleaned up, I then moved to the front of the engine. I turned it over to TDC and pulled the distributor and the front crank pulley so I could replace the front cover gasket and seal. While I was at it I planned on replacing the water pumps with my new Speedway ones too. Well, apparently the water pumps had been on the engine for years--the mounting bolts located in the water outlets were so rusted that the hex heads were eaten away and no socket would fit `em.
